Time to WIN Again!

That's right, I promise another chance to win a copy of THE CLEANER at the end of March, so here it is!! All you have to do is post a comment to this entry naming the best book you've read in the last 12 months. Give us the title, author, and, if you can, a link to either the author's website or someplace we can learn more about the book. (That last part is not a must...only if possible.) That's it. All entries that have followed those directions will go into a hat and a winner will be randomly drawn.

Contest ends at 9 p.m. Thursday March 29th...

As always: My family, members of Killer Year, previous winners, and those who already have an ARC of THE CLEANER are not elibible...you can contribute, but your names not going into the hat.

I'd have to say the best new novel I read this past year was Alex's The Harrowing.

I like Jennifer Colt's McAfee Twins Series, too.

Of course, Konrath is good. As is Dusty Rhoades, David Terrenoire, Karin Slaughter, Laura Lippman, Anne Voss Peterson, Julia Spencer-Fleming, Jefferson Bass, Sean Doolittle, Sarah Shaber, Margaret Maron, George Pelecanos, Michael Connelly, James Patteron, Clive Cussler, Neil Stephenson, Bill Crider, Alex Kava, Simon Wood, Louise Ure...

And I just read Joe R. Lansdale's Zombie-Western Dead in the West, which I highly recommend.

Who writes paranormal suspense with mainstream characters, though? That's what I'm hungry for. Stories in the school of Koontz and King.

There's so many reality-based police procedural forensic FBI novels on the market, I need an escape.

Where's a real mind-fuck novelist when you need one?

Stacey,

You should try KISS HER GOODBYE by Robert Gregory Browne...that might be exactly what you're looking for.

Cormac McCarthy's The Road.

I'm not usually a big fan of literary fiction, but this book was so compelling. I coudln't stop turning the page.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield - a marvelously written novel in which the mystery is that of identity. Specifically, what is the real background of England's most famous (fictitious) writer, a woman who has told every interviewer a different story? And it's filled with a love of books, reading, and the importance of words - what's not to like?

For more info, check the review on A Life in Books (not my blog, but a friend's).

Nancy Pickard's "The Virgin of Small Plains"

In no way did I think this would be a book I'd even like, but I'd heard a lot about it. Read the first few pages at the bookstore, bought it and then read it in two nights - thought it was awesome.

Thanks, Brett. Rob's book is high on my list of get-to fiction (as in "I'm going to get to reading that one").

Of course, as soon as I got through my list, I realized I forgot a bunch of other writers most everyone here is familiar with.

Shelby, Lori Armstrong, Allison Gaylin, Karen Olson, Victor Gischler, Anthony Neil Smith, Lee Child, Pete Hautman, Pari Noskin Taichert, Tasha Alexander, James Winter, Laurie R. King, Dana Stabenow, Ken Bruen, Duane Swierczynski, Allan Guthrie, Jason Starr...

See the problem with this is that there are just too many writers to recommend.

The one that keeps coming to mind is a kids' book written by Rick Riordan (who is also an award-winning PI mystery author). It's "Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters" and his website is:

I had opportunity to read an uncorrected galley of Patricia Wood's LOTTERY, which will be released by Putnam on August 2. It just became available for preorder at Amazon.

I couldn't put the book down, reading it late into the night. It's a marvelous story, carefully written, that I think we'll be hearing a lot about in the year to come.

And I really hope I win this contest, Brett, because a little bird **coughAngiecough** told me THE CLEANER was good. Damned good.
